History: In 1953, the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League were looking for a new second baseman to replace their previous second baseman, a teenager named Hank Aaron, who had just been signed by the Milwaukee Braves. Like other Negro League ballclubs, the Clowns were struggling after the 1947 signings of Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby to Major League clubs opened the door for all of the best black ballplayers to leave the Negro Leagues for better opportunities in the big leagues.

History: This club was founded as Dai Tokyo in 1936, and made history when they integrated Japanese baseball by signing the African-American pitcher James Bonner. In 1941 the franchise moved to Osaka and became the Asahi team when they were sponsored by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. When Japanese baseball reorganized into two leagues in 1950, Shochiku became a founding member of the Central League and played in the first Japan Series, losing to the Pacific League's Mainichi Orions.
