History: Jackie Robinson played his only year in the Negro leagues with black baseball's most storied team. Pitching greats Satchel Paige and Hilton Smith were teammates. On April 16 Jackie had a tryout with the Boston Red Sox, along with fellow Negro leaguers Sam Jethroe and Marvin Williams.

History: The Birmingham Black Barons joined the original Negro National League in 1928. After that circuit's demise they became charter members of the Negro American League. In 1948 they defeated the Monarchs for the pennant with a 15 year-old Willie Mays in the outfield.

History: The premier Black club of Baltimore, Maryland, the ‘45 Elite Giants were led by star catcher Roy Campanella. While with the Elite Giants, Campy developed an ability and reputation for handling trick pitches that served him well when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948, where pitcher Preacher Roe threw a spitball.
